Breathwork Training Workshop for Cyclists

Breath training is not a new concept for cyclists. The professional team cyclists of Trek-Segafredo has been utilising specialised breathing techniques and practices since 2016 to aid performance, improve breathing and reduce recovery times.

And you too can become master of your breath.

In this half-day workshop you will learn, practice and apply specific breathing techniques that:

  • Increase oxygen delivery
  • Unblock your nose
  • Reduce stress
  • Build resilience
  • Minimise breathlessness
  • Reduce exercise-induced asthma (also referred to as cycling cough)
  • Improve focus and flow state
  • Enhance respiratory fitness and delay fatigue

Led by Marlon Quinn, certified Oxygen Advantage instructor, PADI Freediving Instructor Trainer, cycling guide and coach and former Directeur Sportif for the Prime Estate Elite Women’s Cycling Team and competitive cyclist.

The Workshop Format

The workshop is designed to optimise your training and adaptation in four parts. It will include indoor breathwork training, an indoor cycling spin room session, an outdoor bike ride (on your own bike), and a cold water immersion exercise.

  • Bike Spin Room Session 35% 35%
  • Outdoor Group Ride 50% 50%
  • Cold Water Immersion 15% 15%

Cycling is so much more than merely turning the pedals to take you places on two wheels. There’s a deep soulful joy that comes from the clean spirit of human power.

Your Instructor

Your coach, Marlon Quinn, a former IT-executive turned seachanger, found new beauty and an expanded life through breathwork.

He trained with World Champion freedivers to learn the art of breathhold, to immerse deep under the surface on one inhale and explore the ocean, as well as his own mind and capabilities.

He has taught judges, emergency personnel, underwater creators, elite sports men and women, and big wave surfers the benefits that breathwork brings.

Through Oxygen Advantage breath training methods, he shares with you the tools and methods that will not only enhance your sports performance, but also your everyday life.

Workshop Sessions & Highlights

1. Breathwork Training

The session begins with an indoor breathing session to set intentions for the workshop and practice aware breathing, mindfulness and exercises for nasal clearing, relaxation and better breathing activation.

2. Indoor Cycling Spin Session

Building upon the breathing session, we’ll then ride as a group to the indoor cycling spin room session. Using stationary spin bikes you’ll then apply a series of breathing exercises to begin developing your adaptation to different exercise intensities and simulate training at high altitude.

3. Outdoor Cycling Group Ride

Following the indoor session, we’ll take a group ride to integrate the breathing techniques in the outdoors. The ride will take a circuit that includes several intervals to test, monitor and evaluate your own performance as you implement the techniques and retrain your breath.

4. Cold Water Immersion

The final step in consolidating your new breathwork methods takes us to the cold water. Using your new breathwork skills and techniques, the cold water immersion exercise provides the opportunity to observe your self in a different environment, to understand the application of breathwork to reduce stressors and build resilience, and to use the breath to achieve better health and quality of life.

Getting There

The Breathwork Training for Cyclists Workshop is held in Portsea, on the Mornington Peninsula in southern Australia.

Portsea is steeped in history as a place for high performance training. It was here that Australia’s world famous track and field coach, the late Mr Percy Cerutty MBE based his training camp, ‘Ceres’, for running and athletics, training 1500m and 4-minute mile record breakers including Herb Elliott AC MBE, Betty Cuthbert and John Landy, as well as cyclist Russell Mockridge.

There is ample parking in Portsea Village, both on and off street. It is recommended to park in the vicinity of the village and Portsea Pier.

It is recommended to arrive in the town of Portsea as much as one hour before the meeting time, to ensure you don’t get caught in traffic, can find parking, relax, and find where you need to be and make your way to the session with plenty of time to spare. Workshops start on time, so please arrive early to ensure you do not miss out.

There are public toilet and changing facilities at Portsea pier if needed.

Additional information will be provided in your booking email.

Limitations: Finding the Source That’s Never Enough
Are we ever enough, or do the thoughts of never being enough intrude upon the enjoyment of the opportunity to live our own way, fluid and free?

In my work as a cycling guide and breathwork coach, it’s often the undercurrent in people’s and athlete’s minds that is the source of the discontent. And nothing at all to do with ability, skills, riding or the performance being undertaken which is abundantly present.

How Do You Get Warm Quickly After A Cold Water Immersion?
As a professional freediving instructor and breathwork coach, I find there’s plenty to be excited and interested about when it comes to cold water immersion in the sea, plunge pools, bathing in icy river streams and the rejuvenating feelings that are so effervescent after a cold water wild swim. But something that doesn’t get much talked about is, well, what do you do once you’re out of the cold water? How do you recover after a cold water immersion? And how do you warm up quickly after a cold plunge? Here’s the answer to how I get warm.
