Qualifications

Achieve Recognised Snorkelling Guide and Supervisor Qualifications

Prepare yourself to properly represent an organisation in a professional capacity as a Snorkel Guide to take unqualified swimmers on snorkelling adventures in the open water. The Snorkel Guide training provides the framework for participants to achieve Australian industry recognised qualifications.

Course Overview

Lead Snorkelling Activities

This course unit develops the skills and knowledge required to lead and supervise dependent participants during snorkelling activities according to predetermined activity plans which might be self developed or developed by others. It covers the skills required to adjust activities according to prevailing conditions and participant capabilities.

During the course, you will perform the demonstration and instruction of snorkelling techniques. To do this, you as the leader must be proficient in snorkelling skills, which are covered by other units.

This course unit applies to any type of organisation that delivers outdoor recreation activities including commercial, not-for-profit and government organisations.

It applies to leaders who work independently using discretion and judgement to manage operational logistics and risk within predetermined guidelines.

When working at or close to base and assistance, you will use the ability to manage routine problems in consultation with relevant personnel. Where assistance is not immediately available, you’ll utilise additional leadership skills, covered by other units, to manage significant problems, e.g. rescues, injury or illness in remote locations.

The outcome of this training program is a statement of attainment in SISOSNK002 Lead snorkelling activities.

Course Content

Snorkel Guide Course Components

  • Knowledge development and knowledge assessment. At the core of this course is the theory session and self-study materials provided in document format. The classroom session discusses the particulars of snorkel diving physics and physiology, group dynamics, snorkelling equipment, hazards, and snorkelling activity organisation
  • Snorkelling skills workshop and assessment (Confined Water). Building upon the theoretical concepts, it’s the practical training in the pool session when meaningful drills and exercises facilitate relaxation and calm for snorkelling experiences, group management, common problem simulations, equipment donning and doffing, plus swim assessments and enhancement of general snorkel skills. A timed 400 meter swim, 15 minute tread water, 800 meter snorkel swim and 100 meter tied Snorkeller tow are required. A skills training circuit and then assessment of those skills is also included.
  • Snorkel guiding and rescue simulation assessment (Open Water). The Open water training supports the essential development of snorkelling leadership and training others in snorkelling skills. Problem prevention, group management, setting and determining the safe snorkel area and delivering the guided experience complete the course experience.
  • Practical application workshops and assessments. Practical workshops, demonstrations and assessments are completed and assessed throughout the duration of the course.

I went into this course [Freediving Course] with high expectations as a result of a referral from a trusted source and not only were my expectations met, they were exceed. I’m an experienced a scuba diver and Instructor myself, but a novice free diver. Marlon is very experienced free diver, but more importantly a very good teacher, the two don’t always go together but in Marlon’s case, they certainly do. He’s knowledgable, patient and walks a good line between fun and serious learning. If you are interested in learning to free dive in Melbourne, do not pass Go, etc … go straight to Marlon ! Finding the Source That’s Never Enough

Limitations: Finding the Source That’s Never Enough
Are we ever enough, or do the thoughts of never being enough intrude upon the enjoyment of the opportunity to live our own way, fluid and free?

In my work as a cycling guide and breathwork coach, it’s often the undercurrent in people’s and athlete’s minds that is the source of the discontent. And nothing at all to do with ability, skills, riding or the performance being undertaken which is abundantly present.

How Do You Get Warm Quickly After A Cold Water Immersion?

How Do You Get Warm Quickly After A Cold Water Immersion?
As a professional freediving instructor and breathwork coach, I find there’s plenty to be excited and interested about when it comes to cold water immersion in the sea, plunge pools, bathing in icy river streams and the rejuvenating feelings that are so effervescent after a cold water wild swim. But something that doesn’t get much talked about is, well, what do you do once you’re out of the cold water? How do you recover after a cold water immersion? And how do you warm up quickly after a cold plunge? Here’s the answer to how I get warm.
